INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

A viola quartet is an absolute rarity that that overwhelms and captivates with its distinctive tone. Now Tabea Zimmermann, the BRSO’s artist-in-residence, will present just such a dark, velvety ensemble sound on the TonHalle concert platform as part of the “Watch This Space” series, playing York Bowens Fantasy Quartet and Garth Knox’s Marin Marais Variations on the Folies d’Espagne. Between these viola quartets are two pieces for flute, viola and harp: Arnold Bax’s Elegiac Trio of 1916, inspired by French Impressionism, and The Garden of Joys and Sorrows by Sofia Gubaidulina, who coaxes magically delicate sounds of nature from the three instruments. Ms Zimmermann will be joined by musician friends from the BRSO.

Artist in Residence: Tabea Zimmermann

Violist Tabea Zimmermann inspires audiences around the world with her wonderful, dark timbre viola sound and her impressive playing technique. Together with her as artist in residence, we will perform three diverse concert programs – predominantly with works from the 20th and 21st centuries.
