Information about the programme
For this year’s concert in the Watch This Space series, the budding talents of the Orchestra Academy and members of the BRSO have worked out an American programme bursting with contrasts. George Crumb’s Black Angels, composed in 1970 during the Vietnam War, is devoted to a bleak era marked by the horrors of war. The sound vacillates between humming string tremolandi and passages of blood-curdling quiet. At the opposite extreme is Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, premièred in 1944; its warm string chords and vivacious flute melodies depict an idyllic world embodying America’s hopes for a radiant future after the Second World War. Between these extremes is Café Music, Paul Schoenfield’s burbling cityscape of 1986. This blend of jazz, ragtime and Jewish music sets high artistic standards. At the same time, the composer tells us, it’s also meant to be performable in a restaurant – hence the title!
