INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
Scelsi almost excessively probes the overtone register of the solitary pitch: each piece in his Quattro pezzi per orchestra of 1959 is limited to a single note, tinged with microtonal inflections, octave transpositions and overtones. This is music full of drama and pathos, mingled with meditative tranquillity. Orbiting an acoustical space is also a feature of many works by Nikolaus Brass. For the première of his In der Farbe von Erde (In the colour of earth), for viola, 44 strings and two percussionists, we were fortunate to obtain Tabea Zimmermann, the BRSO’s artist-in-residence. Another world première follows with …the Brent geese fly in long low wavering lines … by Hans Thomalla, whose scores effortlessly blend avant-garde sonorities, passages of minimal music and broad swaths of noise. Thomalla follows the transitory tracks of migratory birds with music in constant flux that seems to transcend the laws of gravity.

Part of the musica viva concert series
This concert is part of the musica viva-concert series of the BR. Musica viva is one of the world’s most famous events for future-oriented and contemporary music, where many experimental works and performances for orchestra and chamber music receive their premiere.

Artist in Residence: Tabea Zimmermann
Violist Tabea Zimmermann inspires audiences around the world with her wonderful, dark timbre viola sound and her impressive playing technique. Together with her as artist in residence, we will perform three diverse concert programs – predominantly with works from the 20th and 21st centuries.
