For years Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian RSO have supported the Süddeutsche Zeitung’s “Advent Calendar for Good Deeds”. Now, under the banner of “Music for All Children”, the proceeds from these benefit concerts will further the musical training of children from disadvantaged families. These annual concerts for the Süddeutsche Zeitung’s charity traditionally offer a mixture of guest celebrities and repertoire staples. This time the 32-year-old star pianist Igor Levit does the honours with one of Mozart’s most ceremonious and multi-hued creations, the Piano Concerto K 482. Following it is Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, a tour of the Russian soul in all its emotional depth and capacity for suffering.
