Feel like taking a world tour? At least Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian RSO Orchestra will offer musical souvenirs from Europe, America and Asia in their first New Year’s Eve Concert. Once again the evening will open with last year’s two great centenary celebrants: Bernstein’s sparkling Candide Overture followed by Debussy’s idyllic Clair de lune. A wild bear-dance by Elgar, a morbid waltz by Sibelius and a Slavonic Dance by Dvořák prepare the entrance of the soloist of the evening, Seong-Jin Cho. He will play the Romance from Mozart’s D minor Piano Concerto (K 466) and the Allegro con fuoco from Tchaikovsky’s first Piano Concerto. Further programme highlights include Mascagni’s melodious Intermezzo and fiery Spanish zarzuelas. At the end Maestro Jansons will unleash a musical fireworks display with an Hungarian Dance by Brahms and Rumanian folk music by Ligeti.
Cancellation of Lang Lang
After a longer injury break, Lang Lang consistently follows his doctors’ advice not to play concerts on two consecutive days until further notice, as his management told us. Accordingly, he will now perform only at our New Year’s Eve concert on December 31, 2018. As a soloist, we were able to engage one of the world’s most sought-after young pianists, the Korean Seong-Jin Cho (www.seongjin-cho.com) for the festive concert “70 years of SZ advent calendar”. Both concerts are conducted by our chief conductor Mariss Jansons.
