Susanna Mälkki, Conductor

Gil Shaham, Violin

Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks

about the programme

A musical friendship of more than 30 years’ standing connects the BRSO with the Israeli-American violinist Gil Shaham, our artist-in-residence in 2013-14. Now we can experience him in Prokofiev’s breathtakingly virtuosic First Violin Concerto, which allows the soloist to display the full range of his prowess between bewitching lyricism, unchained rhythms and iridescent timbres. Once again the corona virus has allowed us to explore little-known repertoire: Sibelius’s incidental music, a substantial part of his oeuvre, often breathes the same vibrant sonorities and narrative atmosphere as his symphonies. His music for King Christian II, expanded into a suite, was written in 1898, one year before his First Symphony. At the conductor’s rostrum will be Susanna Mälkki, the head of the Helsinki Philharmonic since 2016 and a welcome guest with the BRSO.

BRSO-concerts without live audience until May 9, 2021

The Bavarian state government decided to extend the lockdown until May 9, 2021, among other measures to contain the corona pandemic. On this basis, the Bayerischer Rundfunk is forced to cancel the concerts of its orchestras, choir and musica viva with live audiences until May 9, 2021.
