Simon Rattle’s concerts enjoy cult status in Munich. The reason has not only to do with his fiery conducting but with the works he brings with him. This time we can look forward to an exciting repertoire novelty: the music from Rameau’s final opera, Les Boréades. Its buoyant élan infected Sir Simon when he witnessed its belated première in 1982, two centuries after its creation. Another pièce de résistance is Richard Strauss’s late masterpiece, the beautiful and nostalgic Horn Concerto. Here the departing solo horn player Eric Terwilliger offers a fitting going-away present to his audience and his orchestra.
