Sir Antonio Pappano made his first guest appearance with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra as far back as 2002, so it’s high time for another visit from this stellar British conductor. Pappano has been rousingly acclaimed as the longstanding head of London’s Covent Garden Opera House and the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome. The main item on his unusual programme is Sergei Rachmaninoff’s superb Second Symphony, which once again fully exploits the rich melodic vein of this “last of the romantics”. Listeners will also hear the Second Symphony by that universal genius of American music, Leondard Bernstein, to honour the centennial of his birth. Its subtitle, The Age of Anxiety, relates to the like-named poem by W. H. Auden, which spontaneously inspired Bernstein to compose a symphony with a part for solo piano. It’s no accident that Auden’s subject – four uprooted young people – recalls Nighthawks Edward Hopper’s famous painting of New York nightlife. With his dark elegy to the metropolis, Bernstein struck a nerve with the post-war generation, poised between loneliness and hedonism while yearning for stability in faith. The brilliant protagonist is the Russian pianist Kirill Gerstein, who is making his BRSO début in Bernstein’s highly relevant Age of Anxiety – and will doubtless draw on his experience in jazz.
