INTRODUCTION
Introduction 6.45 pm with Maximilian Maier (Moderator) and Prof. Dr. Hartmut Schick
In a special concert, Simone Young will conduct two highlights of the repertoire: Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony No. 41 and Richard Strauss’s monumental Ein Heldenleben (A hero’s life). Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben does not fall short when it comes to power and impact. Here the successful 34-year-old composer created a self-portrait, a monument in notes for a gigantic orchestra. Opening in the radiant key of E-flat major like Beethoven’s “Eroica”, it represents a climax in Strauss’s mastery of orchestration. In various episodes he outlines the internal and external struggles that his hero must undergo before finding peace. In “The hero’s companion”, the tenderness of requited love is expressed in the melody of a solo violin, played here by concertmaster Radoslaw Szulc. Jansons and his fellow-musicians will have this virtuosic orchestral tour de force and Dvořák’s Seventh in their luggage when they set out immediately afterward on their grand Asian tour of Taiwan, Japan and Korea.
To his great regret, Mariss Jansons needs to cancel his obligations with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra for the month of November. We are pleased to have Simone Young for this concert on extremely short notice.
