Sir Simon Rattle in Munich

Sir Simon Rattle returns to Munich to conduct Joseph Haydn’s “The Seasons”. And again it is one of the less known secular oratorios he chooses after Schumann’s “Das Paradies und die Peri” in September 2010.

After the phenomenal success of the oratorio “The Creation”, Gottfried van Swieten, Haydn’s librettist and mentor asked the composer to write another oratorio, based on “The Seasons” by Scottish poet James Thomson. Van Swieten has translated it into German and was ready to support the project financially. Although the music of “The Seasons” is just as vivid and colorful as “The Creation” – with Hunting Tunes, Sunrises and dancing farmers – it has never been as successful!
