Paul Celan, Friedrich Hölderlin, Walter Benjamin: these are the three great lodestars in the creative work of Peter Ruzicka. They are also something akin to his soul-mates. Not only did he devote full-length theatre pieces to all three of them, they also inspired many of his instrumental works. But Ruzicka never sought to retell the lives of these three men so much as to make their unique artistic personas visible and audible with all their traumas and contradictions. His orchestral work Fünf Bruchstücke (Five fragments), for example, draws on the fragmentary character of Hölderlin’s late lyric poetry, while … Inseln (Islands), for violin, chorus and orchestra, encircles the cosmos of the Jewish poet Paul Celan. With Flucht (Flight), an orchestral piece of 2014, Ruzicka embarked on a journey into the inner workings of the philosopher Walter Benjamin, leading to the opera Benjamin of that same year. All three pieces find Ruzicka standing at the conductor’s desk of the Bavarian RSO. Joined by trumpeters Sergey Nakariakov and Giuliano Sommerhalder, they will also give the world première of his most recent work, Loop, for trumpet, piccolo trumpet and orchestra.
