THE VIOLA – “A PHILOSOPHICAL INSTRUMENT”.

Tabea Zimmermann has excited audiences all over the world with her marvellous dark-hued viola tone and her impressive technique, which she employs particularly in music of the 20th and 21st centuries. In contrast to the virtuosic violin, she calls the viola a “philosophical instrument” that sets one thinking. Her commitment to contemporary music was also the reason why, after many other awards and distinctions, she received the coveted Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in 2020. The laudatory address praised “her incorruptible playing style, her authentic and personal demeanour and artistic integrity” as well as her “uncompromising quest for excellence, the wholly novel radiance that she lends to her instrument, and her unaffected commitment to contemporary music”.

All these qualities can be heard this season with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, where she serves as artist-in-residence. The earnestness with which she performs contemporary music at the highest level also convinces her audience.
