Aivars Kalējs: Toccata on the chorale ‘Allein Gott in der Höh’
It is rare enough for the organ to be central to a symphony concert at one of our subscription concerts, but on 14 and 15 March the Latvian concert organist will be the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra’s guest. She is not only the incumbent organist at Hamburg’s new Elbphilharmonie but is one of the comparatively few popular figures in the world of classical organ music. She trained as an organist and pianist in Riga, Stuttgart and London and has already won many prizes in competitions, including the International Organ Competition in the Canadian city of Calgary. She has also made a name for herself by transcending traditional boundaries in an exceptionally wide-ranging repertory. At the Munich Philharmonie she is appearing as the soloist in Francis Poulenc’s Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani and in Camille Saint-Saëns’s Third Symphony, also known as his “Organ Symphony”. In doing so she is temporarily awakening from its slumbers the mighty instrument made by the firm of Klais, an instrument that only a few years ago was subjected to a thorough restoration. The evening’s conductor is Mariss Jansons.
