Ever since violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann gave his début with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1985, at the age of 20, he has enjoyed a close friendship with the orchestra and its present principal conductor Mariss Jansons. This time they will present the breathtakingly virtuosic First Violin Concerto by Sergei Prokofiev. It’s the perfect work for Zimmermann, who knows how to coax primordial forces and ravishing cantilenas from his Stradivarius. Maestro Jansons, for his part, can indulge his fondness for Prokofiev, with his unique elegance and brilliant orchestration, in a work that unites rich-veined melody, barbaric rhythms and evocative timbres. First admiration, then contempt: thus Beethoven’s response to Napoleon – and he was not alone. This same struggle is reflected in the gestation of his Third Symphony, the Eroica. With its revolutionary pathos and explosive form, it was greeted with widespread puzzlement at its Vienna première in 1805. Yet two years later a reviewer lauded it a “the greatest, most original, most artful and, at the same time, the most interesting of all symphonies”. Maestro Jansons also starts the evening in an heroic vein: the triumphant final galop of the overture to William Tell, Gioacchino Rossini’s final opera on the like-named Swiss freedom fighter, has become a hit of the classical repertoire.
