Welcome Daniil Trifonov
Daniil Trifonov is perhaps the most sought-after pianist of today. In any event, audiences and critics alike wax ecstatic at the brilliant technique and mature musicality of this young Russian who, within the space of six weeks in 2011, won both the Arthur Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv and the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Now he has released a new Chopin album. It was high time for his début with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of its principal conductor, Mariss Jansons. For this occasion Trifonov chose Richard Strauss’s wickedly virtuosic, wittily diabolical “Burlesque”. At its première in Eisenach, in 1890, the composer was exactly as old as Trifonov is today: 26. To open his Strauss programme, Maestro Jansons chose the symphonic reflections on Friedrich Nietzsche’s visionary epic “Thus Spake Zarathustra”, with its popular opening fanfare that has even achieved fame as a film score. It’s the perfect ice-breaker. And as a musical send-off Jansons chose another symphonic poem by the young Strauss, “Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks”. Not all the pranks are merry, however: the rascal ultimately winds up on the gallows. But not before presenting his musical calling card one final time at the end: He who laughs last laughs loudest!
