Gustav Mahler
Symphony No 7 E minor

Daniel Harding, Conductor

Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks

important note

Daniel Harding has kindly agreed to take over as conductor of the concerts on 7, 8 and 9 May 2020. This change of conductor is accompanied by a change in the program: instead of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, which Mr. Harding led with our orchestra in 2014, Mr. Harding will now conduct his Symphony No. 7.

Daniel Harding, a welcome guest at the helm of the BRSO, has often thrilled us with his readings of the Mahler symphonies. So it’s a stroke of luck that he was able to take over these concerts on short notice for our recently deceased principal conductor, Mariss Jansons. But instead of the Sixth, which he has already performed with the BRSO, he will conduct the Seventh, the one with the famous Nocturnes. Nocturne I, a bleak composition of “other-worldly solitude”, is followed by a shadowy scherzo and Nocturne II, a serenade with violin, guitar and mandolin. Surrounding the nocturnes are a powerful, propulsive opening movement and a strangely jubilant finale whose over-the-top optimism has kept tongues wagging to the present day.
