Béla Bartók drew his mightiest inspiration from the music of his native Hungary. Lurking behind the unassuming title Hungarian Sketches is a renewal of music’s expressive resources in the spirit of unspoilt peasantry. The powerful Violin Concerto, long considered a jewel of the repertoire, dates from his late period. Here it is performed by the French violinist Renaud Capuçon. Finally, the immaculately crafted Concerto for Orchestra allows every instrument in the orchestra to function as a soloist. Heading this multi-faceted all-Bartók programme is the young Israeli conductor Lahav Shani, who already created a sensation in his début at the helm of the Bavarian RSO.
