INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
“You know how it is when someone asks you to ride in a terrific sports car, and then you wish you hadn’t?” In short, John Adams takes us on a short joy ride at a madcap speed. We can catch our breath in the first two lyrical movements of Barber’s Violin Concerto, only to return to a dizzying clip in the Presto in moto perpetuo. The soloist, Gil Shaham, was the BRSO’s artist-in-residence in the 2013-14 season. Now he is returning to his musician friends in Munich to play this towering work of the American violin repertoire. Conductor Lahav Shani will then indulge our kinetic impulses in Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, originally conceived as a ballet score.
