“Ever sorrow – eyes upward – celestial dew – memory”: these words by Anton Webern, set to music in an aphoristic work for soprano and string quartet, stand as a motto above this extraordinary and cleverly assembled programme. The pieces in the first section interweave like meditations from wholly different eras – pious, contemplative, ravishingly beautiful, yet pervaded by a tone of “sweet sorrow”. Schubert’s G major Quartet likewise directs its gaze into unknown regions. Few works of the chamber repertoire contrast sorrow and imploration with the existential force and urgency of this solitary and visionary masterpiece from the year 1826.
