This chamber recital with musicians from the BRSO is full of contrasts. The Israeli-American composer Paul Schoenfield will feature alongside the Catholic French composer Olivier Messiaen – and the protean sound of Christopher Corbett’s clarinet. Schoenfield’s Café Music and Trio, with their echoes of klezmer, jazz and ragtime, offer light music at its very best. In contrast, the wholly personal idiom of Messiaen’s Quatuor builds on birdsong motifs (above all in the clarinet) and special rhythmic patterns. The motivation behind Messiaen’s music was Christian faith and the Catholic liturgy.
