Last year Iván Fischer celebrated the thirty-fifth anniversary of the formation of his Budapest Festival Orchestra, when they also released their twenty-fifth CD together. Fischer’s career as a conductor was influenced as much by Leonard Bernstein as it was by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, but as a native Hungarian he has naturally conducted a great deal of music by his fellow countryman Béla Bartók, and it is with Bartók that he is returning to the podium of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. For once the powerfully expressive Dutch violinist Janine Jansen is not performing Bartók’s familiar Violin Concerto but a lesser-known work, a delicate, small-scale piece in which the composer painted a musical portrait of the love of his youth, the Swiss violinist Steffi Geyer. In its rhapsodic opening movement he expresses his admiration for the grace and delicacy of her playing, while the bravura second movement pays tribute to her gifts as a virtuoso. Fischer ends his concert with the thrilling Romanian Folk Dances that have always been among Bartók’s most popular works. These two pieces by Bartók are intertwined with two of Mozart’s symphonies. At the heart of Fischer’s programme is Mozart’s antepenultimate symphony, the majestic E flat major Symphony K543. And the concert begins with the Symphony in C major K338, the last symphony that Mozart wrote in Salzburg but one that was not performed until he moved to Vienna in 1781. The result is an outspokenly festive and infectiously lively presentation piece.
