Our Artist-in-residence for the 2020-21 season
Igor Levit is one of the leading pianists in the international classical arena and perfectly at home in the world’s great concert halls. Among the highlights of his career so far are his collaborations with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Bavarian State Orchestra. Since 2019 he has held a professorship for piano at Hanover University of Music, Theatre and the Media. Munich’s Süddeutsche Zeitung has called him a “stroke of luck” for the concert landscape, and The New Yorker has lauded his technical brilliance, tonal allure and intellectual drive”.
Last autumn this new star on the classical firmament brought out a highly acclaimed complete recording of the 32 Beethoven sonatas, just in time for the master’s 250th anniversary. In times such as ours, Friedrich Schiller’s “All men shall be as brothers” gains special importance. That’s how Levit sees it, too: now that cultural life has come to a nationwide standstill owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, this 33-year-old artist has raised a banner of solidarity with his Social Media House Concerts.
