INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
Leonidas Kavakos was already the BRSO’s artist-in-residence in the 2018-19 season. Since then the orchestra has joined him in the violin concertos of Sibelius, Beethoven, Berg and Korngold as well as Shostakovich’s First. Now he will play Mendelssohn’s exhilarating E minor Concerto, with conductor Herbert Blomstedt at his side. The soloist at the première wanted to play it “so that the angels in heaven will take delight”. Bruckner’s Romantic Symphony forms a perfect complement. To quote the definition of romantic music given by E. T. A. Hoffmann in 1810: “The music of romanticism discloses to man an unknown realm, a world that has nothing in common with the external sensual world that surrounds him, a world in which he leaves behind all definite feelings in order to surrender himself to an inexpressible longing.” His view is perfectly in tune with both Mendelssohn’s concerto and Bruckner’s symphony.
