about the programme
The Spanish conductor Gustavo Gimeno, the new head of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, will give his BRSO début. This trained percussionist with a special penchant for rhythmic and percussive music has assembled a programme of neo-classical pieces. Sergey Prokofiev’s Symphonie classique, conceived in the style of Haydn, toys with playful, feathery virtuosity. Igor Stravinsky’s ballet Apollon musagète tells of the god Apollo and his muses, with whom he dances graceful pas de deux. But the heart of the programme is Dmitri Shostakovich’s Concerto No. 1 in C minor for piano, trumpet and strings, played by the Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov and Martin Angerer, solo trumpeter of the BRSO. Here Shostakovich quotes the classical masters while intermingling neo-classical traits with the “New Sobriety” style of the 1920s.
