Sibelius wrote more than 100 songs, and they were by no means merely pièces d’occasion. On the contrary, he used them, as he once confided, to “express his inmost being”. Yet their later orchestral versions are rarely heard in the concert hall. Now British baritone Simon Keenlyside, a distinguished singer of art song, and Franz Welser-Möst have made a selection from this rich treasure trove, including settings of German, Finnish and Swedish poems. In the second half of the programme Welser-Möst, a seasoned Strauss conductor, will abduct his audience into a sophisticated yet delightful blend of rococo à la française and early 20th century by playing the suite from Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, after Molière.
