Information about the programme
Schumann, Brahms, Dvořák: with this programme Daniel Harding delves into the core regions of Romanticism, albeit via three highly contrasting pathways. Brahms’s monumental Second Piano Concerto is a stern representative of symphonically conceived absolute music; as played by our artist-in-residence Kirill Gerstein, it’s also the evening’s pièce de résistance. Brahms would never have contemplated experimenting with the “modern” genre of the symphonic poem, as did Dvořák after his return from America. Here ballads by the Czech poet Karel Jaromír Erben form the basis of four pieces (including The Wild Dove) with which Dvořák, then at the height of his fame as a symphonist, plunged once again into uncharted compositional territory. One of the great visionary creations of the Romantic era is Schumann’s Manfred, a “dramatic poem with music” after Lord Byron, composed in 1848. Usually all one hears in the concert hall is the overture, which, however, already foretells the tragedy and inner turmoil of the eponymous hero.
