about the programme
The Swedish trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger is second to none in ensuring that there exists a wealth of contemporary concertos for his instrument. The works written for him by such composers as Henze and Pärt, Takemitsu and HK Gruber, have long ago found their way into the standard repertoire. One such work is Harrison Birtwistle’s Endless Parade of 1987. Bookending this exciting modern trumpet concerto are Schubert’s “Unfinished” and a gem that transports us to the world of the French baroque. Thomas Adès’s artful orchestrations of Couperin preserve the grace of the original harpsichord pieces while projecting a sophisticated novel soundscape. It is even worth detecting the modernism, the disturbing fractured radicality, in the familiar tunes of Schubert’s “Unfinished”. Our guide on this far-flung musical journey is the British conductor Daniel Harding.
