Information about the programme

Two things in this concert are especially worth looking forward to: the solo use of cor anglais and double bass (rare occurrences in chamber music) and music full of lightness. “Musique sérieuse sans gravité” was the artistic credo of Jean Françaix, and it might even serve as a motto for the entire programme. Michael Haydn’s quartet is still fully beholden to the divertimento tradition of Viennese classicism. The Serenade op. 8, by the young Beethoven, envelops its listeners in an unending flow of ravishing melodic ideas. Rossini’s duet of 1824 breathes the esprit of comic opera. And Françaix, in his quartet of 1970, irresistibly combines bubbly wit with delicate, introverted cantabile.
