“There is a lot of seriousness in this piano concert, but also a lot of humour.” This is Igor Levit’s take on Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, which he performed together with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra on May 14, 15 and 16. BR-KLASSIK met the pianist beforehand, during one of his rehearsals in the Philharmonic Hall in Munich’s Gasteig.
Spotlight on Rehearsal: Kit Armstrong rehearsing Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 1 (2015)
Pianist Kit Armstrong from the USA performed Béla Bartóks Piano Concerto No. 1, Sz. 83 at Munich Philharmonic Hall. It was his first time performing this piece on a concert stage. He was accompanied by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Alain Altinoglu. BR-KLASSIK visited the first rehearsal and met the 23-year-old pianist for a quick chat.
Spotlight on Rehearsal: “Kontakte” by Karlheinz Stockhausen (2015)
Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard and drummer Dirk Rothbrust performed Karlheinz Stockhausen’s masterpiece “Kontakte.” a composition for electronic systems, piano and drums, at ‚musica viva‘. BR-KLASSIK joined them for rehearsal in the Herkulessaal and talked to both musicians about the works of this visionary of sound.
Lang Lang rehearsing Tchaikovsky (2015)
Wild horses, social media and opening chords like a volcano. These and many more are Lang Lang’s associations with Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. BR-KLASSIK met the pianist beforehand, at the public final rehearsal in Munich. On May 1, 2015, Lang Lang played Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto with the symphonic orchestra under the baton of Andris Nelsons.
Spotlight on Rehearsal: Barbara Hannigan singing “Let Me Tell You” by Hans Abrahamsen (2015)
“Let me tell you” for soprano and orchestra by Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen is based on lines of Ophelia from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. It is dedicated to Canadian sopranist Barbara Hannigan, who premiered it under the baton of Andris Nelsons in Berlin in 2013. Now, Nelsons and Hannigan performed it in Munich, together with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. BR-KLASSIK joined them at a rehearsal.
Spotlight on Rehearsal: John E. Gardiner & Antoine Tamestit
On May 21 and 22, star violist Antoine Tamestit played Hector Berlioz’s “Harold en Italie” together with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of John Eliot Gardiner, all the time moving around among the musicians on stage. Why he did so is being explained in this episode of “Spotlight on Rehearsal.”
“The German Requiem”: Spotlight on Rehearsal with Yannick Nézet-Séguin
The German Requiem by Brahms has been with Yannick Nézet-Séguin for half of his life. BR-KLASSIK met the Canadian conductor at one of his rehearsals and talked to him about musical balm for the soul, his love for the Baroque period and the challenges of life both in the here and now as well as in the hereafter. Nézet-Séguin is a well-received guest on the podium of the BR’s choir and symphonic orchestra. He conducted the “German Requiem” on June 25 and 26, 2015 in Munich’s Herkulessaal.
Lisa Batiashvili pracitcing Prokofiev (2014)
Born in Georgia and now living in Munich, violinist Lisa Batiashvili is rehearsing Sergei Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in D major, op. 19 in the Herkulessaal in Munich Residence. She is accompanied by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of the American conductor David Zinman.
Gil Shaham rehearsing Bartók (2014)
Israeli-American violinist Gil Shaham was the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra’s “artist in residence” in 2014. As a conclusion to this gig, he played under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
