about the programme
Programme changes are a daily occurrence in times of corona, but fresh ideas also bring great surprises. One of them is Shostakovich’s Second Violin Concerto, the small forces of which make it virtually tailored to covid conditions. The soloist is Baiba Skride, a Latvian violinist of international stature. Composed for David Oistrakh, the concerto is dominated by the dark theme of individual vs society, struggle vs assertion – a theme that pervades Shostakovich’s late works as a whole. Despite the extreme reduction of resources, the result was a melancholy concerto with moving violin cantilenas and pounding march-like orchestral passages. Andris Nelsons contrasts this work with the Ninth Symphony, in which Shostakovich honoured the memory of the victims of World War II while refusing to apotheosize Stalin’s victory. The dictator never forgave him.
