Aziz Shokhakimov

Regrettably, Sir John Eliot Gardiner will not be able to conduct the concerts on 17 and 18 June 2021 as originally planned, due to quarantine restrictions on all travelers entering Germany from Great Britain who are not members of national football teams. We are grateful to Aziz Shokhakimov for agreeing to conduct the concerts on such short notice. The 33-year-old Uzbek, Chief Conductor designate of the Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg and Kapellmeister at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, will make his debut with the choir and symphony orchestra. Please note that the change in conductor has also necessitated a program change.

ANDRIS NELSONS & BAIBA SKRIDE

With an all-Shostakovich programme, Andris Nelsons and Baiba Skride came to Munich beginning of June. Skride played Shostakovich’s 2nd Violin Concerto, which Andris Nelsons juxtaposed with the Ninth Symphony. We were very happy that it was possible to play the concerts for our audience. HRŮŠA With BRAHMS And DVOŘÁK

With Jakub Hrůša, one of the most renowned conductors of the younger generation returned to the BRSO. The original plan was to perform Mahler’s Third Symphony followed by a European tour – everything not possible due to the pandemic. Hrůša’s alternative programme reflected his current preoccupation with the two composers Brahms and Dvořák. The 1st Symphony by Brahms and the “Biblical Songs” by Dvořák with Gerhild Romberger as soloist were heard.

Shortly after it was founded by Eugen Jochum in 1949 the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (BRSO) developed into an orchestra of international repute. The British trade journal Gramophone placed it among the top ten of ‘the world’s greatest orchestras’, as did the Japanese music magazine Mostly Classic.

Whether in its Munich concerts or on its worldwide tours, the BRSO works on a regular basis with renowned conductors and soloists. It can boast of numerous CD releases and prizes, including a Grammy for ‘best orchestral performance’ and the German Record Critics’ Prize.

The core missions of the BRSO also include promoting young talent and cultivating the music of our time. From 2003 -2019 the orchestra has been headed by the Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons.
