Sir John Eliot Gardiner
John Eliot Gardiner is known for his extraordinary and relational programs. Haydn’s Symphony in F Minor opens the concert evenings on March 23 and 24, 2023 in the Herkulessaal. The symphony is one of the most enigmatic and radical works from Haydn’s pen. Weber’s operatic scenes follow like a posthumous explanation for the symphony’s passionate tones. Incidentally, Schubert’s Symphony No. 1 marks the beginning of John Eliot Gardiner and the BRSO’s Schubert cycle, which will extend over three seasons.

BETWEEN BAMBERG AND MUNICH
Two of Bavaria’s most important orchestras have come together in a friendly exchange and are giving a concert in each other’s city: the Bamberger Symphoniker in Munich and the BRSO in Bamberg. The Munich audience can therefore experience Jakub Hrůša not only as a guest of the BRSO, but also with his “own” orchestra on 14 April in the Herkulessaal. Julia Fischer will play the world premiere of the violin concerto by Johannes X. Schachtner. After the interval you will hear Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony “From the New World”. The BRSO’s return visit to Bamberg will be in July with Bruckner’s Fifth under Christian Thielemann.
KIRILL GERSTEIN & DANIEL HARDING
Our Artist in Residence, Kirill Gerstein was a guest of the BRSO on March 9 and 10, 2023 together with Daniel Harding. You can now listen to the concert here. The program included Brahms’ monumental Second Piano Concerto, Robert Schumann’s “Manfred” Overture, op. 115, and Antonín Dvořák’s symphonic poem “The Wood Pigeon,” op. 110.
The Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, conducted by its longtime chief conductor Mariss Jansons, is featured on this new CD release from BR-KLASSIK with three works by Peter I. Tchaikovsky, Igor Stravinsky and Edgar Varèse. Live recordings from 2015 (Tchaikovsky, Varèse) and 2013 (Stravinsky).
BRSO PODCAST “SCHOENHOLTZ”
On 31 January 2023, the 2nd season of the podcast SCHOENHOLTZ will begin: once again, host Anne Schoenholtz will take us behind the scenes of the BRSO and, as usual, meet colleagues to talk in the orchestra’s own container in the Werksviertel-Mitte. Solo trumpeter Martin Angerer will kick things off. But external guests are also back, including Anne-Sophie Mutter, Herbert Blomstedt or Konstantin Wecker – and of course the future chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle: this time not only by telephone at the end of each episode, but also as a guest for an entire episode!
