Giovanni Antonini’s initial appearances had the force of earthquakes: what was this Milanese musician doing with early music? He presented it at fast tempos like rock music and transported his audience into seventh heaven. Now Antonini wishes to take up arms for Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and show that even Beethoven’s Eighth can offer fresh insights. The French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras will play the C major concertos by Joseph Haydn and Ignaz Pleyel, recalling the musical contest that Haydn and his former pupil Pleyel fought in London in 1791/2. Now you can be judge and jury and pick your favourite. But don’t pass your verdict too soon!
