Is “philharmonic” a dirty word? When Philippe Manoury abandons the hierarchical codes that determine who is allowed to sit where in the orchestra, he roundly rejects of the social orders of classical-romantic music. To him, the symphony orchestra is not an historical monument. And yet, the way he reorganises the sonic landscape of this newly commissioned piece for Porto and Munich betrays great solicitude and love for the symphonic apparatus. Where Luc Ferrari rapturously invites the devil into the orchestra, Milica Djordjević, in her work commissioned for the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, plunges deep into the literary universe of the Yugoslav writer Mika Antić: “My entire life was possessed by desires / To have a bird different from all the others.” Djordjević, a Berlin-based Serbian composer, works with motifs from the ornithological myths of this writer, mariner and puppeteer who died far before his time, a man who probed “heights and depths, brightness and gloom, big questions, small miracles, and everything in between”.
