Richard Strauss
An Alpine Symphony, op. 64
Daniel Harding, Conductor
Paul Lewis, Piano
Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks

For his second appearance with the Bavarian RSO this season, Daniel Harding is bringing two absolute darlings of the repertoire to Munich. Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto made the composer world-famous and remains among the most frequently performed works of its genre – small wonder, given its felicitous synthesis of virtuosity, romantic exuberance, Norwegian hues and intimate lyricism. Few listeners can resist the magnetism of Strauss’s final tone-poem, An Alpine Symphony. Here Strauss displays his full mastery of the orchestra and expands the alpine hike of the title into a peak experience of grandiose sublimity.
