Beethoven himself considered the Missa solemnis his “greatest achievement”. Indeed, he produced only two settings of the Mass. This second one caused him to undertake such intensive studies of philosophy, theology and music that he failed to complete it in time for the ordination of his friend Archduke Rudolph as Cardinal of Olomouc. By the time he finished the Mass three years later it had far outgrown its liturgical setting and raised universal claims to be a music of ideas.
