This programme, assembled by the British conductor Robin Ticciati, might be headed “Shaping musical time outside the box”. Ernst Bloch once called Wagner’s Parsifal a “metaphysical adagio”; Act III in particular, heard here in a version by Claudio Abbado, unfolds in unparalleled other-worldly tranquillity. The musical exploration of time as a flexible element is also the subject of George Benjamin’s Sudden Time, a piece dating from 1993. Another long, hymnic adagio opens Sibelius’s final symphony, the Seventh, whose single-movement form has remained surrounded by mystery to the present day.
